Big Brother is checking your social media resume

Here’s a scary thought: 8% of American companies admit to having already dismissed staff for having inappropriate use of social media.

Want a scarier one? There’s now companies that exist and profit from screening your social media background before you even get short-listed for that dream job interview. Check out this post on FastCompany.com, talking about one such company from Santa Barbara in the US.

Funny thing is, I used to have a boss that did the same with every job interviewee (Hi if you’re reading – you know who you are). He even said after he hired me that he noticed I had a very professional Facebook profile which was a clear positioning statement. Lucky me. Then, I later found myself doing the same when hiring people for my own team.

Sceptical whether this is relevant or not? Just ask the police. All around the world, they’re already using fake Facebook profiles to (there are many, many more examples than what is listed):

There’s more eyes and ears on the ground than ever before. The next time you decide to make a career move, consider what it is your potential employers can learn about you online, or you may never make it to that interview.
